A Brief History of The Acton Youth Band and Associated Societies
The band was created in the month of June, 2006 for an end of year assembly. Unfortunately, this band was not well organized or prepared and so fell apart a week after its creation.
It seemed that the band was done for good. Well, that was until Alex Hilson, the founder of the last band started doing calculations. Soon after this Alex started talking to his friend, Luc Ballentine.
Luc was the second member of the new band. It seemed funny that a defeated band had risen out of the dust to fight again. After Luc joined things started picking up. Calculations were done and the boys had started talking to people interested in sponsoring the new band. Not long after this the old members started rejoining, as well as new. The band was given a name about his time, the Acton Youth Band. The name symbolised that the band was intended for the youths of Acton, Ontario. The Acton Youth Band then figured out its goal, to teach music to Acton's youths as well as play music of all styles, therefore promoting music.
Things were going good for a time. Another old founding member, Eric St. Pierre created a site and forum for the band. It seemed like the band would be ready for Christmas, but then things changed. Alex got sick and his foot was broken through an accident. The sponsors left the band one by one. By November the band had to restart.
The band could only try it's best to start up, but with no help it was a practically impossible task.The band just talked and with limited advertisment waited for someone to help the band. The band went in this limbo until Sobey’s officialy said they would help the band get instrument money in January, 2007.
At present, the band is still trying to get the money so dearly needed for instruments and uniforms. Sobey’s is still helping the band raise money through barbaques and such. Other people seem interested in the band and might even sponsor it. The band is trying to advertise itself more. Not only in Acton, but in the surrounding area, too. The band has many fine, young and talented musicians in it's mist who can play anything from flute to euphonium to violin. The band plays all sorts of music and tries to appeal to all sorts of people. It is open-minded and always loves getting advice.
The bandsmen are all dedicated to the band, some even giving there own hard earned pocket money to the band. Though this is not enough to get the whole band instruments, which out of about 30 members only 2 or 3 have. But soon, with the help of the public, this non-profit association might rise to victory.
The Band Council was formed at the beginning of February, 2007. It is a committee that helps the band with as many things as it can. It is very democratic and most of the rules and concerts are done through its votes. It basically gives everyone in the band a say on how it is run.
Youth You is a different part of the Acton Youth Band that does additional concerts and such. It was formed in January, 2007. The existing members are the only people that can let others in.
“The Cannabals” is the name the band uses when it does rock gigs. The band chose the name "Cannabals" because of a long standing joke told by members. The mispelling of cannibals is because we thought that by taking out the I in cannibal and replacing it with an A it could be more unique. Apart from this, A is the first letter of Acton.
The Recorder Choir of The Acton Youth Band is an enterprise for the younger members of the band. It plays different size recorders, fifes, penny whistles and drums.
The Bruise Brothers are two brothers who occasionaly perform with the band. They’ve played in several concerts and are very experienced. They usually dress up in 70’s style outfits and sing.
